Mr Vahur Luhtsalu


Mr Vahur Luhtsalu was born in Tallinn, Estonia and started his cello studies at the age of 8. He had been instructed by many well-known cellists from all over the world. He obtained a master’s degree in music at Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and pursued an active career as cellist and teacher since 1997. At the beginning of his career he focused mainly on chamber music genre performing classical repertoire for cello and piano with Estonian pianist Andres Paas, performing in many music festivals, competitions and other public appearances in Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Norway. Besides his concert activities he taught chamber music at Tallinn Georg Ots Music High School. Over the years he had been principal / member of cello section of many orchestras in Estonia, Hungary, Turkey and Indonesia.

He had recorded classical works for cello and piano for Estonian and Hungarian national radio stations and CDs with Estonian National Symphonic Orchestra under various labels (Consonant Works, Alba).

He led the Cello, Chamber Music, Symphonic String Literature study programs at the Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Conservatory of Music in Lippo Village, near Jakarta. In August 2019 he became the Chief Conductor of UPH Symphony Orchestra. He had premiered, recorded many solo cello, chamber music and orchestral works of Estonian and Indonesian composers – with whom he performs regularly in Indonesian art music scene. In recent years he had appeared as instructor of masterclasses and adjudicator of music competitions in Indonesia and Singapore. As cello soloist he had premiered works of Indonesian and classical composers in Indonesia with IOEF Youth Orchestra and Orchestra Camerata Indonesia among others.

Mr Vahur currently teaches Cello at Tanglewood Music School.
